Guaranteed Appointment and Ordination Process

  • The issues of guaranteed appointment and ordination process are symptomatic of deeper dysfunction in our leadership credentialing and support system; creating conference level positions and a culture of call do not adequately address deeper issues – we must improve our processes of discernment and assessment rather than seek remedial solutions.

We do need remedial solutions for clergy who have gone their own way [Note: this does not include the loyal opposition on both the right and left who remind us of larger issues when we get caught in being too practical]. Like early Methodism we are again trying to discern the relationship between Arminian and Calvinist theologies – I don’t know how we will finally resolve these tensions but working at them will strengthen every other part of our connection.
